3-second answer: If the front wheels don't pull and the transfer case motor spins or clicks, check in this order: 1) auto hubs (the classic — they disengage with age; swap to manual), 2) shift motor on the BW1356 (rusted contacts), 3) vacuum lines if your truck has vacuum-disconnect axles. 90% of "4x4 not engaging" is the hubs.

The three suspects

1. Auto hubs (the classic)

The pulse-vacuum auto hubs wear out and stop locking. Symptoms: front end makes no engagement, hub clicks, or engages only sometimes. The permanent fix the community swears by: manual locking hubs (Warn/Mile Marker, ~$150). Manual hubs also let you unlock for better mileage and less TTB wear.

2. BW1356 shift motor

The transfer case's little electric motor corrodes internally. Symptoms: 4x4 light blinks or nothing happens when you hit the switch. Test: the motor has a plastic cover over the contacts — clean or replace. You can also shift the case manually with the 12-point bolt on the side (never force it).

3. Vacuum-disconnect axles (some years)

If your front axle has a vacuum motor on the passenger side, a rotted line means no engagement. The common upgrade: a posi-lok cable or manual conversion that eliminates vacuum entirely.

The cheap check

With the truck on level ground, engine off: crawl under and see if the front driveshaft spins freely — if it does and the case is in 4HI, the case is the problem. If the shafts are locked but no pull, it's the hubs.
