Why TTB trucks do it

The TTB front end has more moving parts than a solid axle (ball joints, radius arms, tie rods, kingpin-style geometry). Wear in any one joint creates play that, at the right speed, turns into a violent self-sustaining shimmy. It feels like the truck is falling apart — it isn't; it's 1-2 worn parts.

The checklist (in order)

  1. Ball joints — the 12-and-6 movement test (see ball joints). Worn TTB ball joints = #1 cause.
  2. Tie rods / drag link — 9-and-3 movement, or just look for torn boots.
  3. Wheel bearings / spindle nuts — grab the tire top/bottom and rock; also check the spindle nut torque (200 ft-lb).
  4. Tires — balance + a worn/bent tire amplifies everything. Rotate front to rear to test.
  5. Radius arm bushings — the clunk-and-shimmy combo.
  6. Steering box slop — the Saginaw box lash (see power steering).

The cheap check

Jack the front so both wheels hang. Grab each tire at 12-and-6 and 9-and-3 and rock hard. Any clunk = a joint with play. Fix the play, kill the wobble.
