3-second answer: The flashing OD OFF light = the E4OD's computer has stored a transmission code (it's the CEL of the trans). Read the codes before buying anything. Fluid capacity is 13.9 qt dry; a pan drop takes ~5 qt. Use plain Mercon, not Mercon V, unless you've verified the rebuild spec.

What the OD OFF light means

The E4OD has its own computer that lights the OD OFF lamp in the dash when it detects a fault (it's not the overdrive switch). Get the codes: 1. Ground pin 2 of the diagnostic connector (or jumper STI-to-SIGNAL RETURN on the OBD-I connector). 2. Watch the OD OFF light blink: long blinks = tens digit, short blinks = ones. Code 14 = 3rd gear failure; 33 = rear speed sensor; 34 = MLPS; 23/25 = shift solenoids. 3. Find the code table before touching the valve body.

Why E4ODs fail (in order of likelihood)

  1. Solenoid pack / valve body — worn solenoids, dirty valve body. Fix: new solenoid pack + good filter + Mercon. This fixes a huge fraction.
  2. MLPS (manual lever position sensor) — the "neutral safety switch" on the side of the case. Loose or failed = no shift, no start.
  3. Torque converter clutch (TCC) shudder — the famous 45-55 mph shudder. Often just fluid + conditioner; sometimes the TC.
  4. Hard parts — sun shell, sprag, drum. Rebuild time ($1,500–2,500) or swap in a used unit.

Complaint signal

NHTSA has 596 powertrain complaints for 92-97 F-series/Bronco, and owners describing repeated E4OD failures ("7 transmission failures", "many and multiple part failures") show up across the data. The transmission is the OBS's most complained-about mechanical system after brakes and fuel.
