3-second answer: 5.0 (302): 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 · 5.8 (351W): 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 · 7.5 (460): 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 · 4.9 I6: 1-5-3-6-2-4 · 7.3 diesel: 1-2-7-3-4-5-6-8. Both V8 distributors turn counterclockwise; cylinder 1 is the front passenger side.

The trap

The 5.0 and 5.8 look identical from the front and share most parts, but the 5.8's firing order is different. If you swap plug wires from a 5.0 onto a 5.8 (or a 351 into a 302 chassis with the old wires), it will run like garbage — or not at all. Check the block ID before wiring.

Cylinder numbering (V8)

1-2-3-4 on the passenger side (front to back); 5-6-7-8 on the driver's side. Distributor rotation is counterclockwise on all of these.
