3-second answer: The cluster comes out without the dash: 4 screws (top of the cluster bezel), pop the bezel, 4 cluster screws, unplug the two harnesses, and it's in your hands. Behind it: the PSOM (see [speedometer](/problems/speedometer-psom/)), the gauge cluster board, and all the bulbs.
The removal (20 minutes)
- Tilt the steering column down for clearance (and remove the wheel on some trims).
- Pry the cluster bezel off (4 screws + clips), unplug the 4x4/OD switches behind it.
- Remove the 4 cluster screws.
- Tilt the cluster out, unplug the two connectors (they release with a tab pull).
- The cluster's on your bench: bulbs twist out (the backlight bulbs are the common dead-light fix — 194-style), gauges unplug, the PSOM board unbolts.
The common fixes behind the cluster
- Dead backlight = burnt bulbs (cheap, while you're in there replace them all).
- Dead speedo/odometer = PSOM or odometer gears.
- Fuel/temp gauge dead = check the cluster board solder joints (hairline cracks are classic on these) before blaming the senders.
- Tach erratic = the tach driver on the board or the ignition signal.
