3-second answer: The M5OD's reverse grind is usually just the clutch not fully disengaging (adjust the rod / bleed the hydraulics) or the synchro ring on 1st/reverse. 2nd gear popping out is the shift rail detent or worn fork. And the sloppy shifter that everyone hates is the shifter bushings (~$20) — not the transmission.
The famous complaints
- Reverse grind — check clutch adjustment and the hydraulic system first (M5ODs share the fluid with the brake system: DOT 3 in the clutch master). Grinding on a cold engagement is often just the truck's quirk; constant grinding = synchro ring or clutch drag.
- Shifter slop / vague engagement — the shifter ball-and-socket wears. The fix: new shifter bushing kit. Night-and-day.
- 2nd gear pop-out — detent or fork wear; sometimes fixed by a thicker shift rail detent. Rebuild territory if it's the synchro.
Fluid
- The M5OD takes Mercon ATF (not gear oil!) — ~4.5 qt. Many owners report quieter shifts with fresh Mercon; some swear by a partial synthetic blend. Do NOT put GL-5 in it.
Rebuild reality
An M5OD rebuild is ~$600-900 parts+labor vs a used unit swap at ~$300-500. For a driver, a good used unit is usually the value play; rebuild if you want it fresh.
