3-second answer: Wobbly tilt wheel = the tilt pivot bearings/bushings (a $20 kit, column disassembly). No start / accessory dies = the ignition switch on the column (not the key cylinder) — it's a $20-30 part bolted mid-column. Key stuck / won't turn = the key cylinder (and check the shift interlock cable).
The three classic column problems
- Ignition switch — mounted on the column, actuated by a rod from the key cylinder. It wears out: accessories die, no crank, or intermittent everything. The test: if the key turns fine but nothing electrical happens, the switch (or its rod) is the culprit. Access is dash work around the column.
- Tilt wobble — the tilt mechanism's plastic pivot wears. A tilt rebuild kit (~$20-30) replaces the bushings and stops the wobble. Requires pulling the wheel + column disassembly — an afternoon.
- Key cylinder — worn keys stick; the cylinder is a $20 swap (with the airbag and lock plates handled carefully). Disable the shift interlock first if it fights you.
The safety notes
- Disconnect the battery and wait 10+ minutes before touching the column — the airbag is in the wheel.
- Keep the clock spring (SRS coil) aligned when the wheel comes off — misaligning it kills the airbag/horn.
- Column work is fiddly but not hard: take photos as you go, bag the fasteners.
