3-second answer: Every OBS has a vacuum diagram sticker under the hood (usually the underside of the hood or the radiator support). Before buying a diagram book, read that. The most common failure: the vacuum reservoir (the black ball under the battery tray) cracks, and the HVAC/4x4 vacuum lines rot at the firewall.
What vacuum does on these trucks
- HVAC blend/defrost doors — vacuum-actuated; a leak means no defrost (bad in winter).
- 4WD hubs / transfer case (some years) — vacuum-disconnect front axle.
- EGR, evap, cruise — all vacuum switched.
- A big leak = rough idle, high idle, or stalls. Hissss = leak.
The standard leak points
- Vacuum reservoir ball (under battery tray) — cracks after 30 years.
- The hard lines across the firewall — rot where they bend.
- Intake manifold EGR plate gaskets (4.9 especially).
- Anything a shade-tree mechanic "fixed" with a bolt.
