3-second answer: A sloppy, vague M5OD shifter = worn shifter bushings (the ball-and-socket under the boot). A ~$20 bushing kit (and an hour) makes it feel new. This fixes 90% of 'the M5OD feels terrible' complaints — the transmission itself is usually fine.
Why it gets sloppy
The shifter sits in a ball-and-socket in the top of the transmission. The plastic socket and the shifter-to-rail bushings wear after 200k miles of stirring. Result: the shifter flops around, gears get harder to find, and it feels broken.
The fix
- Shift to neutral, remove the boot and the shifter retaining hardware.
- Pull the shifter, replace the socket/bushings from the kit (some kits also fix the shift rail detent — do the whole kit).
- Grease, reinstall, tighten the retaining plate (torque to spec — over-tightening binds the shift).
- Test every gear before the boot goes back.
While you're in there
- Fresh grease on the socket (the kits include it).
- Check the shift rail seals for leaks.
- This pairs well with the M5OD grind page — a tight shifter exposes real gearbox issues honestly instead of hiding them in slop.
