3-second answer: A shudder at 45-55 mph in 4th gear with light throttle = the torque converter clutch (TCC) slipping as it locks. The first fix: fresh Mercon + a friction modifier/conditioner (Lubegard or the Ford conditioner). This fixes a big fraction of them. If it persists, the converter or the TCC solenoid is the next step — not a whole rebuild.
Why it happens
The TCC locks the converter at highway speed. Worn/faded fluid, a tired solenoid, or glazed clutch material makes the lockup slip — that's the shudder. It's the most common E4OD complaint on every OBS forum, and it's often misdiagnosed as a dying transmission.
The fix order
- Fluid + conditioner — pan drop, new filter, fresh Mercon, add the friction modifier. Drive 50 miles. This fixes a large share.
- TCC solenoid / EPC — if the shudder persists, the lockup solenoid (or its wiring) is suspect. Check the OD-light codes first (see E4OD).
- Converter — a worn converter needs replacement (reman ~$300-400). You're already most of the way to a rebuild labor-wise — decide rebuild-vs-swap with the rebuild guide.
- Never "fix" it with thicker fluid or stop-leak — that's a band-aid that kills the transmission slower.
