The 3-second version: 92-97 F-250/F-350 = the OBS body on heavy-duty bones. Engines: 5.8 · 7.5 (460) · 7.3 IDI · 7.3 Power Stroke (94.5+). Trans: E4OD · ZF5. Axles: 10.25 Sterling (F-250), Dana 60 (F-350). Front: TTB Dana 50 (F-250) / solid Dana 60 (F-350 4x4).
The heavy-duty differences
- The OBS body lasted through 1997 on the F-250/F-350 (the F-150 redesigned in '97).
- Diesel: the 7.3 IDI (92-94) and Power Stroke (94.5-97) are the money engines here. See diesel coverage.
- ZF5 manual — the overbuilt 5-speed with the famous 5th-gear nut issue.
- 8-lug wheels: 16" 8x6.5 pattern; lug torque 140 ft-lb.
- F-350 4x4 front: solid Dana 60 (not TTB) — the F-350 is the heavy-duty choice for a reason.
Specs at a glance
- GVWR: F-250 ~8,600-9,000 lb · F-350 ~9,200-11,000 lb
- Axles: F-250 = 10.25 Sterling (3.55/4.10) · F-350 = Dana 60 (4.10 common)
- Towing: see Towing & payload
- Fluids: see Fluid Capacities (diesel oil = 10-14 qt)
What owners love/hate
- Love: the 7.3's longevity, ZF5 toughness, parts availability.
- Hate: diesel fuel system costs (injection pump, glow plugs), the E4OD behind a 460/7.3, and the 8-lug wheel/tire cost.
